What is an orthodontist?

Orthodontists are dental specialists who dedicate their professional lives to correcting misaligned teeth and jaws.

Orthodontists are qualified dentists, who after graduating from dental school, go on to additional full-time university-based education in an accredited orthodontic residency program supervised by orthodontists. That training lasts at least two academic years—sometimes more. By learning about tooth movement (orthodontics) and guidance of facial development (dentofacial orthopedics), orthodontists are the uniquely trained experts in dentistry to straighten teeth and align jaws.

Do I have to be referred by my family dentist for an orthodontic consultation?

No, referrals are not necessary.  If you think you or your child might need some orthodontic treatment, you can make an appointment directly with the orthodontist.

When should I bring my child to an orthodontist for her first checkup?

It's a good idea to bring your child for her first checkup at age 7 as their permanent teeth start to come in.  Early detection of bite problems can often reduce the need for extensive treatment later on.

I'm 38 years old and want to have my teeth straightened.  Am I too old to start treatment?

More adults than ever are deciding to finally have their teeth straightened.  Teeth can be straightened at any age, although treatment can sometimes take a bit longer with adults.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Most full treatment orthodontic cases take 24 to 30 months to complete, although not all patients fall into that category.  Treatment time is greatly affected by patient cooperation, growth rate, bone density, complexity of the malocclusion (bite problem), and other factors.

Will I have to wear elastics during my treatment?

Almost all patients have to wear elastics at some point during their treatment.  The length of time that elastics have to be worn depends on the complexity of the treatment and on patient cooperation.

What should I do if one of my brackets comes off?

Call the office and arrange to come in for a repair appointment because there usually won't be enough time scheduled during your regular monthly appointment for the repair.

Will I have wear retainers?

Everyone has to wear retainers after the braces are removed because the teeth will try to move back to their original positions.
